Developed for the Indonesian Air Force, the Hawk Mk.209 is an export, single-seat variant of the British Hawk fighter/attack trainer. A total of 32 of these aircraft were ordered in 1993. Modifications included the installation of a nose-mounted radar and an increased weapons load, allowing the type to combine the roles of an advanced trainer and a light attack aircraft capable of carrying rocket and bomb armament. The aircraft retains the Hawk family’s robust aluminium airframe and simple, reliable aerodynamics, which simplify operation and maintenance.

The Hawk Mk.209’s fixed armament is a 30 mm ADEN Mk.4 cannon with 120 rounds. For air-to-air engagements, the aircraft can be fitted with several AIM-9P-4 Sidewinder short-range missiles. For strikes against ground targets, the aircraft can carry eight Mk 81/Mk 82 and four Mk 83 bombs, plus FFAR Mighty Mouse rockets. For precision ground attack, the aircraft can be equipped with two AGM-65G Maverick guided missiles. As for weaponry against ships, it can use MBDA Sea Eagle anti-ship missiles.

In addition, the Hawk Mk.209 can be fitted with external fuel tanks to extend its range.
